Play dough is, hands down, the best home made “toy” for children of any age. Babies will find the texture to be a sensory wonder, toddlers love it and bigger kids enjoy it too. Play dough is associated with tonnes of developmental benefits, as is homemade cloud dough.

Not only is play dough relatively quick to make and not to mention cheap (working out at around 50p per batch), play dough is also a great addition to your child’s play routine. There are countless benefits and there are countless variations of play dough recipes that really capture the senses.

You can start with scented play doughs or glittery play doughs for example, and then try something new such as play doughs with added textures (try lavender or whole grains, seeds and oats.)

A Few Benefits Of Playdough:

Play dough is really good sensory fun and is so versatile – there are so many benefits as well as play opportunities. Free play sessions with play dough help develop fine motor skills by building up strength in the hand muscles, readying children for pencil and scissor control, and later on in life, handwriting. Using play dough scissors and cutting and tearing up play dough is also fun and beneficial for writing, and therefore language skills. You can find a list of benefits, as well as a comprehensive list of additional extras to create the ultimate play dough kit here (from The Imgaination Tree).
Luke’s play dough kit is growing and I am really excited to start making more ‘exciting’ variations for him to play with. I am looking forward to making sparkly play doughs with glitter, textured doughs and scented doughs. Honestly, I find the creative process – experimenting and researching – just as satisfying and fun as watching Luke play and learn.
