Toddler In The Kitchen: Smoothies Using Breville’s Blend-Active

Toddler In The Kitchen: Smoothies Using Breville's Blend-Active from lukeosaurusandme.co.uk

I have had my Blend-Active since December and I cannot tell you how much I love it. It’s pretty amazing and I honestly couldn’t imagine my kitchen without it now. It serves us in so many ways, from secretly sneaking vegetables into Luke’s sauces, to whizzing up biscuit bases for tasty cheese cakes. But obviously, Breville got this baby spot on for the smoothie lover – that’s us!

I am a massive smoothie fan and have one nearly every day. The hectic life that comes with being a mum, as well as a toddler means it’s often hard for us all to get a good portion of fruit and veg inside us. Smoothies are the perfect way for me to get the fruit and veg in and Luke loves them too.

I want to share with you my tried and tested smoothie recipe that my toddler absolutely adores and only takes a few moments to whiz up using the Blend-Active. Toddlers can help with the entire process too.

The Ingredients: One banana, the juice of half a lime, a handful of frozen blueberries (yum yum), some milk (semi skinned, almond, rice milk etc) and a couple of tea spoons of oats.

Frozen fruits are available to purchase in pretty much all supermarkets, even Lidl (yay), and they work out much cheaper than buying fruit every time you run out. It’s still fresh, just frozen. How freaking good do these frozen blueberries look?

My house is always full of bananas because they’re basically Luke’s most favourite food ever. Limes are often in stock too because they make smoothies taste a million times better. No word of a lie; do not skip on the limes, you’ll seriously regret it. Plus nothing beats the smell of cutting a fresh lime in half. Roll it along the work surface before you cut it, it makes it much juicer.

Chuck your oats, blue berries and your banana into the Blend-Active bottle – there’s no need to cut up the banana or defrost any of your fruits. The Blend-Active is capable of chomping through ice, so it can definitely handle a few pieces of fruit. Luke likes to put the blueberries in one by one and we count as we go. I have to admit, a few do go missing… No cutting up the banana means it’s a quick affair and Luke is less likely to try and steal it and eat it – just pop it in and you’re done.

Pour in your milk of choice! I didn’t measure – if you find that your smoothie is too thick, you can just add more milk to water it down a bit. This is the scary part if your toddler is helping you…I tend to take control here!

Squeeze half the lime! Remember, this bit is like…magic! Lime makes the whole thing taste incredible. It’s a fun thing for toddlers to do too and it’s good for their little hand muscles.

Then all you need to do is screw the blender top onto the top of the bottle, turn it upside down and fix it into the blender part. Press blend! Luke loves doing this bit! The light flashes up, it’s noisy, everything changes colour and he is totally fascinated by it. I love getting Luke involved in the kitchen in what ever way possible. Making smoothies together is a really interesting way of introducing your toddler to the world of cooking and being helpful in the kitchen.

And that’s it: a super yummy smoothie that my toddler will now drain before I even get a chance to drink any for myself.

The Blend-Active has a sports bottle lid so you can easily make a smoothie in the morning and pop off to work, or out with the kids and no need to fuss about. You can even make it the night before and stick it in the fridge.

What I really love doing with Luke is making frozen smoothie treats – a post I will link up soon!
