Top Tips To Help Ease Back Pain

Back pain is something I have suffered with for a long time, even before I had Luke. Sometimes it gets so severe and unbearable that I find myself bed bound! Obviously, as a mother, that situation isn’t ideal. Earlier on this year, I actually almost had to cancel and trip to Disneyland Paris because I spent the three days before we were due to leave, in bed!

It’s taken me a little while to work out the best ways to combat my backache, so I’ve decided to list a few of the most helpful methods here, in the hopes that I might at least help a few other people who are also suffering.

Combogesic Pain Killers

I’ve found that a great step towards getting yourself up and able to move around freely when experiencing back pain is finding a good painkiller that can take the edge off for you. I’ve tried them all over the years, but I have found an effective method is to take a painkiller that includes both Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.

Combogesic pain relief tablets offer you just that. Taking two tablets gives you 1000mg Paracetamol and 300mg Ibuprofen, delivering 30% more pain relief than simply taking the normal recommended dose of each painkiller separately.

The people at Combogesic also believe in the power of combination. The combination of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, as well as the combination of using painkillers to help manage pain, but also ensuring you find the root cause of your back pain.

I’ve been taking Combogesic for about a month and a half now, taking two tablets when my back pain gets too severe and all other exercises/pain easing methods have failed to work. I am really impressed with the double action pain relief that these tablets deliver. The pain killers kick in fairly quickly and start to fight against my back pain within half and hour of taking them. The tablets are capsule shaped and film coated, making them easy to swallow. Each pack of Combogesic contains 16 tablets, so they do last you a little while if you’re taking them sensibly.

Yoga

There are lots of yoga routines that specialise in strengthening and stretching certain areas of your body that are linked to back pain. In fact, there’s a yoga routine for almost any muscular pain you may be experiencing, so it’s really worth giving it a go. You can try yoga out for free by having a look on YouTube; there are tonnes of really informative videos on there which will guide you through the positions to ensure you’re doing everything correctly.

I have a Pinterest Yoga Board filled with beginner and back/hip specific workouts to help you get started. I’ve used the pins from this board lots of times, and I can testify that they really do help. There are also some excellent beginners DVDs I own from Amazon which have helped me immensely, notably these two: Barbara Currie 7 Secrets of Yoga and Element: Hatha & Flow Yoga for Beginners. And of course, if you find yourself enjoying your yoga times, you could always try and find some local yoga classes in your area!

Sarah from Toby Goes Bananas agrees that yoga is brilliant and speaks about the benefits she’s gain since starting yoga: “I’ve had a bad neck/shoulders for 20 years but after starting daily yoga 3 weeks ago it’s already feeling much better. I’m just doing it at home following YouTube videos so it doesn’t even cost anything.”

Emma from Emma Reed also suggests other forms of appropriate exercise such “Pilates or stretching plus regular massages. A sports massage doesn’t mean just for hardcore sports people we can all benefit from having one done.”

Heat

It’s no secret that a nice hot bath does wonders for muscle pain, especially if it is coupled with some special muscle relaxing bubble bath or bath soaks. Did you know that using cold packs can also be helpful in combatting pain?

Carla from Random Thoughts Of A Twenty Something adds that “A reusable combined heat AND ice pack that can be bought cheaply online can help eases different types of pain. Ice is great for inflammation. Heat is great for soothing tighter muscles.”

‘Mummy Back Pain’ AKA Bad Posture

Mummy back pain is one of those things that nobody ever tells you about when you’re pregnant. People should say, “Oh, you think your back hurts now? Wait a few years, love…”

Simply put: bending down, running around, contorting yourself into strange sleeping positions and lifting up heavy children – that stuff puts a strain on your back and, inevitably, you’ll find that you have ‘mum back pain’. You back is aching and it’s all because you’re just a mum, doing mum things.

“When you’re a mummy, a lot can be due to posture” notes Sonia from Buzy Mum, who has written a blog post all about correcting mummy posture.

A Good Quality Mattress

This is something I really need to invest in! A good quality mattress which supplies the proper amount of support can be an invaluable tool when it comes to preventing back pain. The perfect mattress is on our list of “home things” to get since we moved home, unfortunately, decent mattresses that provide the proper support do not come cheaply.

Sarah from Arthur Wears who has suffered from sciatica for many years writes,”invest in a decent mattress – I have had sciatica for years and it improved loads when we splashed out on a new bed with decent pocket springs and support. I also use a maternity support pillow every night – even when I wasn’t pregnant! Make sure you are stretching properly too, right hamstring lead to back pain.”

Medical Help

Don’t forget that if your back ache gets really bad, the sensible thing to do is to seek medical advice. Treating whiplash, for example, will most likely require chiropractic treatment, so always make sure you’re being sensible and treating your health as a top priority.

I do yoga every day though not for pain but for my sanity. Yoga is great for such a variety of different things though from physical pain to mental and emotional wellness. I love Yoga!

I suffer with sciatica really badly and I think we desperately need a new mattress! Just trying to decide which one to buy! I don’t find pain killers do much for me as it is predominantly nerve pain:

I’ve not heard of combogesic before, it sounds good combining paracetamol with ibuprofen. You have some good advice on back pain, posture is a big factor. I’ve also found that having a good mattress is important.

I’m so sorry you suffer so much with back pain. I’ve found Pilates and Yoga really help my back because they strengthen my core so much. I’m glad you have found things that help you manage your back pain.

Between sitting all day at work and carrying my son around, my back is always killing me! Yoga definitely helps a lot though – even just stretching for 5 minutes at night can make a huge difference.
    Thank you for the suggestions!

The only time I experienced back pain was about a year ago and its most certainly one of my worst experiences. I made the mistake of buying a cheap mattress and I regret that decision until now. The first night of lying on it, I woke up to a dip that had already formed. After the first week, my back had already started aching. My neck wasn’t spared either. I continued sleeping on that mattress for a whole month and when my back pain got out of hand, I decided to buy a better mattress which has served me really well till now.

I think people should avoid buying cheap mattresses. Like you said, a supportive mattress helps prevent back pain a great deal. Back pain is actually a very serious condition- I am witness. You’re better off buying a costlier mattress than spending the rest of your life on back pain medication. Learnt the hard way!

I have two kids close in age; five-year-old and three-year-old. I love them to the moon and back but as a mum I got a lot to do and this ends up putting a strain on my back. Yoga has helped me a lot and I’m thinking of getting a heating pad for when I have no time for yoga. Will also try the bath salts. Thanks for this great article Rachel.
