5 Interior Design Trends I Love for 2018

The rest of 2018 is already going 10 times quicker than the whole of January, and we’re looking into the biggest trends coming up this year. Interior design is particularly difficult to nail down due to the ever-changing nature of people’s tastes and, of course, it’s completely subjective. However, there are a few trends that seem to be up-and-coming for 2018. Some new and some carrying through from last year, here’s 5 interior design trends to look out for this year.

1. Statement Art

Replacing the long-admired feature of gallery walls, statement art is less ‘busy’ than having numerous pieces of art all together. Statement art can actually make more of an impact, if you choose something that draws the eye and complements the existing décor. Although many recent examples of this are utilising contemporary art, it only takes a quick look back through the ages to see how it can work in traditional homes just as well.

2. Terrazzo

Yes, that’s right. The 1920s style is tipped to come back in a big way for 2018. It’s turning heads at the moment, popping up in kitchens and even bedrooms, both as flooring and on the walls. Admittedly, it does look amazing when done correctly. Although not for everyone, it’s already won over many people and its following is only going to increase as the year progresses.

3. Ornamentation

Decorative embellishments are a big yes for 2018. Think your scatter cushions and thick, comfortable rugs. Old or outdated décor can receive a much-needed boost, without spending stupid amount on redecorating. Comfy rugs and blankets inject instant cosiness and evoke feelings of Scandinavian elegance, and the new sensation that is the traditional style of Danish ‘hygge’.

4. Neutral Colours

Earthy neutrals are coming to prevalence this year, as the attention shifts from minimalistic white and grey into a more diverse palette of colours. One colour tipped to turn heads this year is sage. Undertones of grey mixed with a soft green is bold yet calming, and perfectly at home in both contemporary and traditional décor. Also coming to fruition this year are soft mustards, olives and jades to add subtle warmth to communal areas for family and friends.

5. Herringbone Parquet Flooring

There’s been a serious resurgence in the popularity of parquet flooring over the past year or two, and 2018 is no exception to the trend. Traditionally laid in a herringbone or chevron style, preference is subjective – although herringbone is more prevalent when you look at interior inspiration on social media and interior magazines. This style of wood flooring has actually been around for centuries, with its earliest example hailing from the 16th century.
