5 Tips For Creating The Ultimate Comfy Bedroom

*This is a sponsored post

As parents, our bedroom usually becomes a dumping ground for everyone else’s things. There’s normally piles of washing that needs to be folded and put away. There’s a vast collection of mugs and glasses which should really be returned to the kitchen. My boyfriend’s ‘floordrobe’ seems to dominate one side of the room. And currently, due to the impending arrival of Baby Number 2, we now have the addition of the SnuzPod, bouncer and a whole lot of nappies.

For a little while, back in the days of being a single parent, I found myself stuck with a 2 year old in a one bed flat and having no way to escape it. For us, it meant my son having the bedroom and me sleeping on a bed in the living room. As well as finding it all extremely embarrassing, it also left me without any form of privacy or personal comforts. When we moved, I had a bedroom for the first time in what felt like forever, and we were determined to make it something special.

Lighting

Nothing sets the tone for a room quite like the lighting. Lights has a huge collection of lighting available, depending on what sort of mood you want to set. For us, we like to have the best of both worlds. A nice bright over head light that fills the room is a must! I need this for writing, blogging from my bedroom and packaging the odd eBay sale. However, for romantic evenings in or cuddly movie nights, something a little more subtle is desired.

Bed

When we found out I was pregnant, we decided it would be a great idea to upgrade our bed. Previously, I’d only ever had second hand beds, so buying a brand new bed and mattress was an exciting treat. It was nice for us to be able to go shopping together and brainstorm the type of bed we wanted. Besides upgrading the size, it also meant we could talk about which style of bed we’d like and how it would match the other furniture in our bedroom.

Rug

One of the first things we bought when we moved in was a big fluffy rug for our bedroom floor. We have wooden floors, so it serves two purposes. One: it looks lovely and makes the whole room feel a lot more snug and cosy. Two: when you jump out of the shower in the en suite, you can run for the rug and feel the fluff between your toes!

Furniture

Matching furniture always makes me feel like I have my life together and that things are going well. I am a huge fan of pine furniture and, even though it’s not to Mikey’s taste most of the time, he will testify that having the majority of our bedroom furniture matching really ties the whole room together. Of course, if you have eclectic tastes and like to mix and match, do whatever works for you! I love seeing how people’s personalities shine through by the way in which their bedrooms are decorated.

Fabrics

When we moved in, we also bought curtains and a lampshade that matched our rug. It’s not essential, but we felt that those were the key aspects of the room and by having them match, everything felt a lot more comfortable and ‘tidy’. However, when it comes to bed linens and fabrics, we don’t stick to the dark colours. I love a bright and cheery bedspread. We have lots of whites, yellows and minty blue duvet sets which all offset the dark colours we chose for the curtains, light shade and rug. The dark colours bring all the comfiness, but the colourful fabric additions really cheer me up, especially on a dreary morning. It doesn’t have to break the bank either, there are loads of bedding deals available online and in stores that mean you can find the perfect duvet set for your bedroom.

Lighting makes sooooo much difference. A room can be so messy but just dim the lights and light some candles and it makes all the difference – plus really sets a nice ambience! X

We are just about to move to our own house after living abroad in rental properties for a long time. It’s going to be so weird being able to decorate our own space, plus with a new bed and everything it will feel super luxurious – not something we are used to! 😀

I love my bedroom suite (it was one of the first big purchases I made) but I’m not keen on my current curtains (they’re more practical and I am looking out for something more ‘me’). Also I recently treated myself to a brand new quilt insert that will actually fit my bed (I’d been using one 2 sizes smaller for almost 15 years). I haven’t unwrapped it yet as I’m waiting on the perfect quilt cover…something I love.

Great, simple tips! I am the queen of matching – you are so right, matching up a few of the main features like curtains, bedding, lights and things and it really pulls a whole room together. And I thought I was the only one who had way too many mugs and glasses tucked away in my bedroom! haha

A rug makes all the difference if you have hard wood floors. But like you we upgraded our bed when I was pregnant and this was one of the best things we did.

My bedroom has definitely become a dumping ground since having smalls. We just moved and I’m determined it won’t be this time. I have added more soft furnishings and touches to make it a hide away x
