Creation Station: Spring Tree Blossom

All this good weather lately is making me SO ready for summer. I am a total sun creature, I just can’t get enough of it and I definitely can’t complain about the great mood it puts me in. But unfortunately, we’re not quite there yet and Spring has that bad habit of throwing some lovely days out there and then chucking in a few days in a row of torrential rain. It’s on these rainy days that we could do with some fun and bright activities to keep our spirits up.

I had loads of spare paper left over from making a whole bunch of beautiful origami hearts for Valentine’s day, so I grabbed my flower shaped paper punch and some other bits and bobs and set up a spring tree blossom creation station.

After I punched a few flowery blossom shaped pieces of paper from the recycling pile, I pottered about the house to see what else we could add to the activity.

I came back with a nice bright pink glitter glue pen. Luke absolutely loves glitter glue pens ever since I let him loose with on when we made sock snowmen for Christmas.

Along with the sparkly, glitter theme, we added some green glitter, because let’s face it – what toddler doesn’t love glitter? Yes, it’s messy, but honestly, that just adds to the fun, right?

The last bits and bobs I found for the creation station is some shaped confetti. We have tonnes of this stuff as they come as a staple with almost every bumper craft pack (which I would highly recommend investing in – our favourite so far is this one from Amazon, it comes with 1001 bits!) I managed to find some confetti that had colourful leaves and butterflies in it – perfect for spring!

After collecting all of these together, I put them all into a dip/snack tray and drew a rough tree shape on an A3 piece of card. I admit, it’s a pretty poor excuse of a tree, but Luke was already sat at his table desperate to get started. Whenever he sees the craft box is out, he gets really excited! In the middle of the tray, I poured a good dollop of PVA glue and handed Luke a stiff paintbrush.

The rest was up to Luke.

He loved the paper punched flower blossom and I’m thinking about investing in some more shapes for different activities. It would be nice to get some different sized paper punches as well.

Obviously the glitter glue went down a treat. It was squirted everywhere (including on his trousers!), some of it was left in big dollops, some had confetti or flower blossom stuck to the paper with it and some was spread about with the paintbrush.

The confetti was also a great hit, with Luke naming each shape he was putting down. Every time he saw a butterfly shaped piece, he’d get very excited and say “butterfly, butterfly!” The confetti really added to the spring theme and I again highly recommend buying some because it’s perfect for all sorts of activities and crafts (like this Valentine’s themed sensory box from Becky at 3 Princesses and 1 Dude.

This activity lasted for about 45 minutes and Luke was really focused. It was difficult to take pictures as he was adamant that I left him to it and kept out of his way. Since I wasn’t allowed to interfere, I sat with him and spoke a little bit about the shapes, colours, a little bit about Spring and counted out confetti and flowers.
