DIY Pom Pom Bookmarks

If you’ve been following my blog this year, you’ll know that I’m doing the Good Reads 2016 reading challenge, and in my updated January Bucket List, you’ll know I read a whopping 8 books in the first month of 2016. I think at this rate, I’m definitely going to have to up my reading goals!

The problem is, I’m getting so sick of being unorganised and having to try and find a scrap of paper or an old envelope when I need to bookmark my page! So this got me thinking…I can’t possibly be the only person who gets sick of it…so I thought how about I come up with a nice easy bookmark craft that all ages could from the toddler years and upwards could do? What a great way to encourage reading in children then to make it that little bit more interactive.

Today I’m going to be showing you how to make these really cute (but also totally useful) pom pom bookmarks that adults and children will love. DIY Pom Pom bookmarks are a quick and simple bookmarking solution. Making pom poms is a super easy craft that children can really get involved with.

You Will Need:

Yarn/Wool in the colour of you choice

Sharp Scissors

How To:

I’ve found the easiest way to make pom poms is to wrap the wool around your three fingers. Take the end of your wool and hold it with your thumb while your wrap the wool around for the first time, after that, keep wrapping wool snugly (but not too tightly!) around your fingers. I recommend anywhere between 80 and 90 times.

Once you’ve wrapped it around enough times, gentle slide the wool off your fingers.

Grab yourself another piece of wool, it needs to be long enough to tie around the wraps of wool you’ve just made. Go ahead and tie a tight knot around the middle of the wrapped wool, make the knot as tight as you can. I advise making it a double knot.

Now grab yourself another piece of wool that’s slightly bigger and tie it round the same place – this is the bookmark tail. Be careful not to cut this long piece of wool in the next stage.

Hold the pom pom to the side and glide your scissors through the little loops and cut. When both sides are done, it will sort of look like a pom pom that really needs a hair cut. Remember: Don’t cut the bookmark tail!

Now you just need to trim all the wool down so it looks a little bit more like a ball and less crazy!

And there you have it, a DIY Pom Pom Bookmark.
