There’s something crazily exciting about planning a big family holiday! I love the feeling of planning a holiday and figuring out all the best things to do and the coolest places to visit. One destination that we’ve been looking at when it comes to planning a family holiday is Mallorca, and, to be honest, who doesn’t want to have a family holiday in Mallorca? With its gorgeous sandy shores and a huge plethora of outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy, what’s not to love?
After narrowing down a few other family holiday locations, we finally found Mallorca at the top of our list. There are so many factors that need to be considered when booking a family holiday, so we had to take everything into consideration. This means that we did A LOT of research about taking a family holiday in Mallorca, the costs, and the things to see and do before deciding that this would be our holiday location.
Today, I’m talking about everything we researched, so you don’t have to spend hours surfing the internet like we did. I’m talking from beaches to villas – we’re going to be talking about everything you need to know for a family holiday in Mallorca, but condensed down a little, so you don’t get overwhelmed with information! So, if you’re ready to learn a little more about this magical island, let’s get started.
Why Have A Family Holiday In Mallorca?
Mallorca, or as we Brits usually spell it, Majorca, is a beautiful sunny island in Spain. It’s rich with history and culture and known for its gorgeous weather, sandy beaches, and pristine turquoise waters.
Mallorca has a bit of something for everyone, which makes it an ideal location for a family holiday. For busy and stressed out parents, the luxurious and tranquil villas on the island offer endless ways to relax and unwind. For the kids, there are countless outdoor activities, sandy beaches, shallow waters and many other factors that make it a brilliant family holiday destination.
Essentially, Mallorca is an ideal location for families looking to enjoy a relaxing and fun family holiday. For a small island in Spain, Mallorca stands out as a family holiday destination due to its versatility. From the quaint and charming towns to the vibrant markets and even the breathtaking historical sites, the island has something for everyone, no matter their age or interests. Plus, Mallorca is an easy island to explore with the help of a trusty hire car, meaning you can adventure together at your own pace and meet the warm and welcoming locals on your travels.
Top Family-Friendly Activities in Mallorca
There are so many fun activities and adventures to have with your family in Mallorca, so we’ve narrowed down a list to include some of the ‘must-see and do’ things on the island. These are obviously based on my own family’s personal preference, but there are plenty of other exciting activities and adventures awaiting if none of these float your boat.
Beach Days – Playa de Muro & Playa d’Alcúdia are must-see beaches
You simply cannot go to Mallorca and not stand in awe of its stunning beaches. Home to some of the most picturesque beaches in Europe, you’re probably going to find yourself spending a lot of time at them!
Playa de Muro, for example, is the top choice for families because of its soft sandy shores and shallow waters. It’s also the largest beach in Mallorca and even features sand dunes. But what’s a beach without food, drinks, and toilets? Well, thankfully Playa de Muro also offers facilities and restaurants nearby, making it easy for parents to plan a day at the beach filled with sea, sand, sun, and relaxation. Not only this but after researching this beach further, I discovered that it’s also one of the cleanest and most eco-responsible beaches on the island, which, as a parent, is an important factor to consider when choosing a holiday destination.
Playa d’Alcúdia is another family favourite, with kilometres of soft sandy beaches, water sports activities, children’s play areas, gym equipment, and, of course, facilities including toilets and showers. The beaches alone are enough to convince me that our next trip away should be a family holiday in Mallorca, however, there’s plenty more to see and do!
Palma Aquarium
If the blazing sun gets a bit too much for you or the kids, or you happen to be unlucky with the weather and get an overcast day, Palma Aquarium offers a lovely indoor retreat, as well as an educational and fascinating glimpse into marine life. Kids can get up close with all manner of exotic fish, and beautiful coral reefs, and let’s not forget about sharks! There are also interactive exhibits to ensure an educational and interactive experience.
The Palma Aquarium also offers additional experience packages, such as the Backstage Door and the Shark Vision Boat. For animal lovers and those with a thirst for excitement, these experiences definitely seem like they’re worth the money. Imagine floating above the sharks, peering down at them through the glass bottom of your boat – that must be a truly exhilarating feeling!
Soller Train Ride
For a calm and serene trip out, the Soller train ride is a wonderful way to kill an hour or two. Transport yourself back in time by taking the scenic train journey from Palma to Soller. This historic train ride winds through the Tramuntana Mountains, and offers breathtaking views of the stunning island, focusing on much of Mallorca’s beautiful countryside, rather than it’s urban areas.
Explore Caves and Castles
Did I mention that Mallorca is rich in history and culture? The island is well known for its enchanting cave systems, like the Caves of Drach. Located on the east side of the island, these caves are easily one of the top attractions in Mallorca. Reaching a depth of 25 metres below ground levels, these caves conceal an astonishing underground lake – Lake Martel – which is regarded as one of the largest underground lakes in the world.
Families can visit the caves and take the tour, which includes a boat ride and a classical music concert. Along the way, holidaymakers will see truly spectacular sights that are unlike any they’ve ever seen before, such as incredible formations and underground turquoise pools.
The island is also home to historic castles, such as Bellver Castle, which offers panoramic views of Palma and a glimpse into Mallorca’s fascinating history. Built in the 14th century for King James II of Majorca, Bellver Castle is one of the few circular castles in Europe, and the only one in Spain.
Waterparks and Adventure Parks
Can you really go to a sunny Spanish island and not take advantage of the water and adventure parks? The Western Water Park and Hidropark Alcudia offer fantastic options for families seeking some adrenaline-packed days. With water slides, lazy rivers, and kid-friendly play areas, these parks are a must-visit for those wanting to book a family holiday in Mallorca.
Choosing the Perfect Villa for Your Family
After researching all of the amazing things to see and do in Mallorca, I’m sure you’re as keen as I am to get the booking process started. Before you start looking at hotels, however, I would recommend considering a villa instead.
When it comes to family accommodations, villas offer the flexibility and comfort that hotels simply cannot match. For instance, a family staying in a villa will have plenty of room to live in harmony, rather than constantly being under each other’s feet. Additionally, the space that you have in a villa is private, meaning you can relax, cook your own meals, and wind down after a day at the beach in your own “home away from home”. You will know that your kids are safe, and there’s no need to book additional rooms if you’re planning on having a big family holiday and inviting grandparents, cousins, or partners.
If you are considering opting for one of the beautiful family villas in Mallorca over a hotel, you’ll find options that suit various budgets, locations, and preferences.
Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect villa for your family holiday:
- Consider Your Location: If your family loves the beach, look for villas close to popular beach towns like Alcudia or Playa de Muro. For families who enjoy exploring, the central and northern regions provide easy access to hiking trails and cultural sites.
- Look for Kid-Friendly Amenities: Many family villas in Mallorca come with amenities like private pools, large outdoor spaces, and nearby attractions. These features ensure that both parents and kids can relax and have fun without travelling far.
- Check for Safety Features: Traveling with young children? It’s wise to look for villas with child-safe features, such as gated pools and secure terraces. You’ll feel more relaxed knowing that the villa is designed with your family’s safety in mind.
- Pick a Villa with a Kitchen: One of the perks of a villa stay is the ability to prepare your meals. This not only saves on dining expenses but also makes it easier to accommodate picky eaters or stick to dietary preferences.
