Focus On Your Body.

When you start feeling stressed or anxious, focus on your body. What sensations do you feel? What movements does your chest make? Ever notice when you’re feeling down, you physically begin to ache? When you’re feeling stressed, your heart races? If you’re feeling down, you might notice your stomach hurts. Why? There’s a change in blood flow that signals your body to move blood from your muscles to organs. When you’re stressed, you breathe shallow, which causes your face’s blood vessels to constrict. Focusing on all these areas can help you to comfort yourself, even when it feels like it won’t be possible. 

Find A Warm, Quiet, Dark Place to Sit.

An easy and effective way to calm yourself down when anxiousness strikes would be to go outside for a few minutes. Get some fresh air, or find a warm, quiet, dark place to sit for a few minutes. Think of something relaxing to do. Listen to music, talk to a friend, read a book, or even meditate.

Use Positive Affirmations

A negative talk pattern is the first step toward a negative outcome. So, if a negative pattern sets in, try a little positive self-talk to change things up. (We’ve all seen this in movies.) Positive self-talk can help you deal with stressful situations, and it will increase your self-esteem. That voice in your head telling you that you’re unloved, no good, and a failure is a liar. It’s time to stop listening to it.

Everyone experiences suffering and pain in different ways, and there’s no one right way to comfort yourself. Some people choose a specific activity, like meditation, while others choose to take up a hobby. If you’re easily overwhelmed with too many choices, pick one item to try out.

When things aren’t going the way you want or planned, giving in to that little voice can be easy. When things don’t seem fair, it’s easy to be angry and resentful. Feeling down is normal, but it’s necessary to find ways to comfort yourself. Falling into a negative mindset can damage your life. 

You can struggle through a bad day or even a bad week but maintaining a positive attitude will ultimately lead to a happier, healthier you.
