Free Printable “First Day At BIG School” Sign

My youngest child officially starts school this month, and to say I’m feeling emotional about that is a bit of an understatement. Fortunately, he attended a wonderful preschool previous to this transition up to infant school, which means he’s pretty used to being away from me during the day. Ozzy isn’t a shy child, so I don’t think the move would really phase him too much anyway, but it’s lovely to see that both the preschool and his new infant school have done so much to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Since Oz will be moving up and starting his proper “big” boy school, I wanted to mark the occasion. I’ve seen certificates and signs before, but my other boy was already attending school so I didn’t think there was much point in purchasing one. Looking back at things, that was probably a pretty pessimistic way of looking at it all. I do wish that I had taken pictures of Luke with “First Day Of…” signs that I could look back on. I don’t want to make the same mistake again, so I’ve created this free printable “First Day At Big School” sign, especially for all the parents of children who are going into Year R/Year 1 this year.

How To Get Your Free Printable “First Day At Big School” Sign.

This sign is free for you to download and print at home. I have specifically designed this for children going up into Year R or Year 1, hence the title mentioning “big” school.

This is what we have been calling it, and I know many other parents do this too when preparing their child(ren) for the transition.

Once you’ve printed this free “First Day At School” sign out, it’s time to get creative!

Many parents choose to take their child’s first day photo using a sign like this. You could try positioning your child in front of your front door when they’re wearing their new school uniform. Have them hold up the sign so you can clearly see their answers and snap away until you get some photos you like. Remember that your child is likely to be quite nervous, so leave a good amount of time to take photos and reassure your child before you have to embark on the school run.

If your child isn’t interested in having their photo taken on their first day of school (after all, they’re likely to be feeling a real mix of emotions), you could set up your own back to school flat lay. I love a good flat lay image as they’re brilliant for social media and super easy to set up. Simply lay your free sign down on a flat surface, such as your floor or a table, and surround the First Day At School sign with related objects. Try using stationary such as pens and pencils, rulers and notebooks to create a beautiful image to capture the moment.
