Recipe: Halloween Shortbread Biscuits
Halloween is the perfect opportunity to get our craft on. There seem to be unlimited numbers of activities, games and crafts that are centered around Halloween and it would be mad not to celebrate the holiday in style with Luke.
We’ve started to get excited about Halloween now that October has arrived. I can’t wait to do some pumpkin carving – you’d think by now I’d be able to do a decent job, but nope, I still suck at it! Luke doesn’t seem to mind all that much though and enjoys making a mess and squelching around all the seeds and stringy flesh…you know, making everything orange. So I’m looking forward to doing that together in a few weeks.
For now, as it’s only the beginning of October, I thought we’d kick things off with some baking.

Luke and I pondered for a little while and decided to make some biscuits as we had already ordered some really cool Halloween cookie cutters and we needed to test them out!
We have made shortbread a few times before. We especially love making lemon and lime flavoured shortbread during Spring time. Shortbread is such an easy recipe to follow and a perfect one for children to help make as everything is taste safe.
Decorating Halloween Biscuits
We used our fool proof shortbread recipe that you can find below and decorated using some icing tube pens and a few of the biscuits got the good old Halloween sprinkles treatment!
If you don’t fancy purchasing a new set of cookie cutters to make spooky biscuits, you could always use that classic gingerbread man Christmas cutter and make mummies!
Our biscuits tasted lush and Luke really couldn’t wait for them to cool down enough so we could decorate them. Icing tube pens are a bit tricky at first but he managed to get the hang of them fairly quickly and squeezing all that icing out is really good for children’s fine motor skills.
Halloween Shortbread Biscuit Recipe
If you fancy making these at home this Halloween, here’s the recipe you will need to follow to make shortbread.
- 175g plain flour
- A pinch of salt
- 55g caster sugar
- 115g butter
- Some chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 150°C/300°F/Gas Mark 2
- Grease a baking tray or use parchment paper
- Cream together sugar and butter
- Add flour and salt and stir. You will need to get messy and use your hands! Add some chocolate chips to the dough.
- Roll out the dough onto a floured surface to the desired thickness
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and then place on your baking tray in the middle shelf of the oven
I’m looking forward to getting more creative with Halloween as the month of October progresses. In the mean time, here are some other Halloween craft ideas for you to try your hands at. My favourite Halloween craft to date is the toilet roll bats!

These look absolutely brilliant! What a fabulous activity to do with the kids in preparation for Halloween, and not too scary either! I’m definitely pinning these to try with my kids.

What a wonderful Halloween activity to get the children involved in, plus you get to eat them afterwards

What fun. It is hard to get a buttery tasting shortbread with just enough butter to taste good but no so much that the biscuits run all over the tray. The girls really enjoy the shape cutting and decorating.

This is great, I’ve been looking for a recipe to use. We normally do gingerbread, but it gets a bit sickly after a while. #KidsandKreativity

We make Halloween cookies as I have a fab pumpkin and ghost cutter, not added choc chips before but sounds like a great idea! Thanks for linking up with #KidsandKreativity. Reall hope to see you again next time x
