Book Review | Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One-Eared Bob (Giveaway)

Recently I was kindly sent a copy of Stephen Hughes’ brand new children’s story book, Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One-Eared Bob*, to read with Luke. I was attracted to the story for a number of reasons but mainly because I’m a sucker for a woodland ‘tail’. Anything with squirrels and their fellow woodland friends always grabs my attention and we have loads of storybooks centred around nature and woodland friends. It’s the type of story that both Luke and I really enjoy, so we were looking forward to snuggling up and giving Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One-Eared Bob a read.
The other main selling point for me was that the story book has been specifically targeted towards Key Stage 1 readers, which makes it a great addition to Luke’s bedtime routine as he’s currently in Year 1 and loves reading.
If you’ want to try your luck at winning a copy of Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One-Eared Bob, keep reading and enter my giveaway.
Luke and I are big readers and so story time isn’t just confined to the bedtime routine.
We love picking up a story, old or new, and snuggling up on the sofa to have a little read. Luke’s always very engaged in the story and will always point things out in the illustrations, ask questions and explains what’s happening in the story. When we sat down to read Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One-Eared Bob, he was really excited to find out who One-Eared Bob was and why he was such a baddie.
Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One-Eared Bob is a really fun read.
Stephen has written the whole story in rhyme, which makes it a great one to read out loud and a fun one for Luke to read along to with me. It’s a real page turner with a strong story line that captures your attention immediately. Who are the Squirrel Squad? What’s their mission? Who are the nasty band of wannabe pirates who follow One-Eared Bob and WHY does One-Eared Bob only have one ear? Well almost every one of those questions gets answered in the book…but please Stephen, what happened to his other ear?!
As with most children’s books, there’s a lesson to be learned.
It turns out that One-Eared Bob and his crew has been terrorising the ducks just because they can! Bob and his lawless gang of rabbits enjoy annoying those poor ducks for their own entertainment. That is up until the Squirrel Squad catch wind of their mean behaviour and decide to set things straight again. If anyone can change that nasty bunny’s attitude, it’s the Squirrel Squad! Can they teach One-Eared Bob and his crew the error of their ways?
We really loved reading this book.
Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One Eared-Bob is a really charming story, accompanied by gorgeous illustrations by Emily Pool. Stephen has written a really fun, gripping story which Luke really engages with and enjoys reading, especially at bed time. I’m sure it’ll go on to be a firm favourite for years to come – even Oscar has enjoyed sitting in on our bedtime story. Squirrel Squad and the Tale Of One-Eared Bob is available from Amazon for £6.99 (as of 04/19).
