Top 4 Tips for Getting Fit in the New Year

The New Year is a great time to start getting fit and ensuring you lead a healthier lifestyle. The idea of ‘getting fit’ can seem pretty daunting, trust me – I know! To combat this, we’re breaking the notion of ‘getting fit’ down into digestible nuggets of information that will enable you to start your fitness journey as soon as possible.

The first step to getting fit in the New Year is to sit down and figure out what your fitness goals are and what kind of exercise routine would be best for you. Once you know that, it’s time to put together a plan. This plan should include the type of exercises that will help you achieve your goals, as well as how often you should do them. You can choose to exercise at home, in public, or at the gym – wherever you feel the most comfortable is a great place to start.

You should consider setting some smaller milestones for yourself along the way, just as long as they’re achievable and realistic for your current level of fitness. Smaller milestones that work up to your ultimate goals will help to keep you motivated and give you a feeling of achievement and satisfaction when reached.

Tip #1 – Get That Diet Right!

Getting fit in the New Year isn’t all about exercise, diet also plays a huge role in your wellbeing. After all, a healthy diet plan is the key to a healthy body. However, despite knowing the importance of a good diet, many people still struggle to put together a healthy diet plan that works for them.

Of course, there are many types of diet plans that you can follow, so it’s all about finding the one that works for you and suits your lifestyle. Personally, I prefer to stick to a calorie deficit as this is easy for me to follow and doesn’t restrict any of my favourite foods. However, some people choose to try other well known diets, such as Keto, which has grown in popularity over the last few years.

However you choose to tackle your diet, you need to remember that eating is key. Many people who want to lose weight as well as get fitter will consider eating less or skipping meals, but this is not ideal. In order to get fit in the New Year, we need to have calories and energy to burn!

Tip #2 – Make Exercise a Priority

Exercise is a vital part of any healthy lifestyle, and is especially important if your goal is about getting fit in the New Year. Exercise benefits us in so many ways, including helping to improve our mental health, energy levels and quality of sleep. However,  it can be hard to stick with an exercise routine, especially when there are so many things that can get in the way.

There are some simple things that you can do to help make exercise a priority, as well as make it easier to stick with your workout routine:

  • Find a workout buddy who will motivate you and keep you accountable
  • Set specific goals for yourself that are realistic
  • Create a schedule for yourself
  • Keep your workouts short and intense

Tip #3 – Track Your Progress

How will you know if you’re getting fitter if you’re not tracking your progress? Getting fit in the New Year is often a resolution that gets broken because people don’t realise just how much progress they’ve made, and they, therefore, stop trying. Tracking your progress is vital and there are lots of ways to see how far you’ve come.

If you want to see the data, I would suggest investing in a smartwatch. These little things have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years and can track and store so much data, including your heart rate and blood oxygen levels. If you want to be able to tell categorically just how far you’ve come, looking at the accompanying app will show you graphs and data that will demonstrate the improvements in your fitness levels.

Remember that standing on the scales is not always an accurate way of tracking your progress. Muscle weighs more than fat and many people choose to give up on their fitness dreams when they start to see that their weight loss has slowed down. I would really recommend a pair of smart scales if you’re planning on tracking your fitness progress this way. Smart scales measure more than just your weight – they can detect your muscle mass, display your BMI, your body fat percentage, your bone mass, and even your muscle mass.

Tip #4 – Keep Motivation High

One of the most important things you will need if your goal is all about getting fit in the New Year is motivation. Motivation can help improve people’s well-being, mood, and sense of achievement. Knowing how to keep your motivation levels high will benefit everyone looking to get fit, stay healthy and enjoy their self-improvement journey.

As I’ve mentioned before, there are many people who give up fairly soon when trying to lose weight or get fitter. The main reason behind this is the lack of motivation to make changes to lifelong habits, such as eating a healthier diet, is simply because it’s so much easier to fall back into old habits that we know so well. But the reason that we find comfort in old habits is because we have stuck to them for so long. Creating new habits is said to take 21 days, so sticking to a new diet or exercise regime may be difficult at first, but over time it’ll become second nature to you.

Remember that everyone, no matter their lifestyle or fitness levels, will fall into a slump. It is natural, but with enough willpower and determination, you will be able to overcome those tough days and discover that leading a healthy lifestyle not only benefits you in terms of reaching your goals, but you will also start to notice that you feel better about yourself.
